Memorials

The NLAHC (in co-operation with the Airfields of Great Britain Trust) has created a new memorial on the site at Hibaldstow, to commemorate all the airmen and airwomen that served in the Allied Air Forces in North Lincolnshire during WW II. An existing memorial previously placed on the site to commemorate No 53 Operational Training Unit of the RAF, who had a presence here, has been repositioned and incorporated into the memorial. It now flanks the pathway approach to the new memorial with its attendant information board. A long approach path bordered by flowers leads to the new memorial which has been laid out to form the full sized plan of a Spitfire fighter aircraft. A line of flagpoles dividing the car parking area from the site allows the flag of every nation that had aircrew stationed at bases in North Lincolnshire during WW2 to be flown on special occasions.

A service of dedication was held at the memorial on the 6th August 2022 officiated by the Rev. David Eames and the memorial was unveiled by Holly Mumby-Croft M.P., North Lincolnshire Deputy Mayor Cllr Janet Longcake and Kenneth Bannerman of the Airfields of Great Britain Conservation Trust. Following the laying of wreaths and conclusion of the formalities with the Last Post and Reveille the assembled company was treated to refreshments, entertained by a singalong with 1940’s singer Kelly Waldie, a performance by the Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Band and finally a fly past by a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire.
